IEEE DUTh SB Elections 2021-22

The elections for the IEEE DUTh SB and its sub-units for the academic year 2021-22 is ahead! We are looking for our next leaders that will contribute with their ideas, passion, and excitement to advance technology for humanity and become the members of the new Executive Committee of our Student Branch.

Important Dates:

  • Nomination period: Saturday, May 8 to Wednesday, May 19
  • Candidates hearing: Saturday, May 22
  • Voting: Sunday, May 23
  • Term duration: July 1, 2021 to August 31, 2022

Electrical and Computer Engineering Student Conference of Greece (SFΗMMY 12), 23-24/4/2021

IEEE Democritus University of Thrace SB attended the Electrical and Computer Engineering Student Conference of Greece (SFΗMMY 12) on April 23-25 with 2 Workshops.

1)Training the Next Generation of Scientist (April 23, 18:30-20:00)

Through a series of experiments with simple materials, the participants found themselves in the position of students who are taught about natural phenomena. Then there was an extensive analysis and commentary of what was said before, offering a series of assets and supplies necessary for participants to create their own lectures for young scientists.

2)Introduction to FPGAs (April 24, 10:30-12:00)

This workshop was focused on beginner level and presented the basic principles of operation of FPGAs, their advantages and disadvantages over other similar devices, as well as some of their practical applications, such as that of electronic power pulsation or biomedicine.

Presentation at EECE Department of DUTh, 23/4/2021

IEEE DUTh SB and each one of our chapters and Affinity Groups presented their work in a virtual event hosted by the department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering at Democritus University of Thrace on Friday, April 23th at 15:00. Participants had the chance to learn about our activities, events, annual teams and the advantages of being a member of IEEE.

Mobile App Marketing, 21/4/2021

The annual "Game Development" team of IEEE DUTh SB in collaboration with the CS SBC of our branch organized the webinar "Mobile App Marketing" on Wednesday, April 21 at 18:30 speaker of which was Magy Kontou! The webinar was focused on the explanation of the marketing flow that follows a mobile application, as well as the best practices / insights that can be used.

In specific, the sections that we covered were:

  • Marketing funnel Analysis (awareness phase until retention)
  • The mechanisms, form and way in which mobile ads work
  • The metrics (KPIs) that affect the strategy
  • Methods that can be used to increase downloads on Google Play and the App Store
  • Techniques to increase mobile app engagement
  • Alternative monetization (revenue) of a mobile application and practices on games

#metoo, Negotiations and Leadership in a workplace, 10/3/2021

The IEEE Women in Engineering (WiE) Student Branch Affinity Group of Democritus University of Thrace, in cooperation with Xánthi TechLab, organizes an event about “#metoo, Negotiations and Leadership in a workplace” in the framework of International Women’s Day Celebration.

The topic of first speech was about "#metoo in a workplace, how to recognize it and what should I do!" by Rafaela Mavridaki, Women On Top volunteer.

The second speech, by Dimitrios Giannakoudis, coordinator of Xánthi TechLab and negotiations and conflict management expert, was about "Negotiations & Conflict management in a work place."

Last but not least, the co-founder of Women Act Antigoni Kouvidi, talked about "Women and Leadership in Greece"

Google Hashcode 2021, 25/2/2021

Our Student Branch took part in this year's Google Hashcode which been held completely digital due to COVID-19 pandemic. 6 teams and 14 participants did their best to reach the top on the scoreboard.

IEEE WIE STAR Program for Elementary @ Anatolia College

IEEE WiE DUTh SBAG has joyously joined forces with Anatolia College Center for STEM Education in Thessaloniki to implement the IEEE WiE STAR Program for Elementary. The IEEE Student-Teacher and Research Engineer/Scientist (STAR) Program represents all pre-university outreach activities.

STAR’s aim is to create a technical support network for teachers and a mentoring program for students, through a series of hands-on activities, in order to convey the message that engineering has career options that benefit humanity, and is gender neutral.

The workshops provided the participants with the requisite theoretical background in order to get fully involved in the practical sessions after.

We are proud of the inclusion of IEEE DUTh Student Branch in the list of "IEEE MGA Exemplary Student Branch Awards" among with many other Student Branches from Greece and all over the world. Congratulations to each Student Branch and a big “thank you” to all of our members who helped our branch receive this award with their continuous efforts under these difficult conditions.

At the same time, we are particularly pleased that a member of our Student Branch, Theodoros Chatzinikolaou has been honored with the Larry K. Wilson Regional Student Activities Award.

The IEEE Greece Section celebrated 50 years of service with a series of online events organized by its Chapters, Affinity Groups, and Student Branches!

The YP Greece Affinity Group, the WiE Affinity Group and 12 SBs located in different cities in Greece presented their work over the past year and their future plans!

Anatolia College x IEEE DUTh SB, #WebineeringDecember

IEEE DUTh SB has joyously joined forces with Anatolia College Center for STEM Education in Thessaloniki to bring a series of webinars to teens interested in engineering. Electrical and Computer Engineering undergraduate students affiliated with the student branch offered three online sessions throughout December, introducing students 12 to 17 to various fields of engineering.

The three webinars provided the participants with the requisite theoretical background in order to get fully involved in the practical sessions after.

AI in Medicine, 17/12/2020

A collaboration between the IEEE CS DUTh SBC and IEEE EMBS AUTh brought the webinar with the title “AI in Medicine”, which held on Thursday, 17th of December 2020 at 18:30 on Google Meet.

The speaker of this webinar was Dr. Leontios J. Hadjileontiadis, Professor in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Senior Member of IEEE.

Introduction to Internet of Things Protocols and Applications, 9/12/2020

IEEE CS DUTh SBC organized "Introduction to Internet of Things Protocols and Applications" Webinar, which took place on Wednesday, December 9 at 18:00! The speaker of the webinar is Mr. Sotirios Goudos, who is an Associate Professor at the Department of Physics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

In this webinar, a brief introduction to the IoT protocol stack was made, which included examples of physical-level IoT technologies, data link (RFID, IEEE 802.15.4 5, IEEE 802.11ah, Bluetooth low energy (BLE)), network-level (IPv6, 6LoWPAN), transport and application technologies (CoAP). In addition, there was a brief introduction to long-range IoT technologies (LoRaWAN, NB-IoT). This was followed by an overview of IoT applications with an emphasis on "smart farming" applications.

5G and Human Health, 28/11/2020

IEEE CS DUTh SBC in collaboration with IEEE AUTh Student Branch and EMB AUTh organized “5G and Human Health” webinar which took place on Saturday, November 28 at 17:00. The webinar was separated throughout three sessions where different speakers have spoken.

In our first session professor of EECE department at AUTh Mr. George K. Karagiannidis had a talk about “5G Wireless Networks: Services and Fundamental Technologies”.

Secondly, professor of EECE at AUTh Mr. Traianos V. Yioultsis talked about “Wireless Radio Frequency Communications: Measurements, Exposure Limits and Means of Protection”.

In our last session professor of Physics Department at AUTh Mr. Theodoros Samaras covered the topic of “5G networks and their potential health effects”.

Data Science vs Modern World, 26/11/2020

In today’s demanding environment we live in, concepts such as Data Science and artificial intelligence try to provide answers to great problems that concern humanity. Managing a pandemic, protecting the environment, social networks and political elections are just some of the issues that these sciences propose innovative solutions for. At the same time, however, they are also evolving themselves. Using tools from other sciences such as Game Theory, Data Science and AI have been able to extend their capabilities and find application in an even wider field of interest.

These issues are covered by the Webinar Data Science vs Modern World organized in collaboration with IEEE CS & RAS DUTh SBCs and the IEEE Student Branch at Sarajevo School of Science and Technology. First session was "Introduction to Data Science and it’s Real World Applications" by Ena Džemila SSST and second session was "Opinion Dynamics: Games on Social Networks and Influence Analysis" by Sotiris Gyftopoulos DUTh.

Introduction to Robotics Webinar is an event co-organised by ΙΕΕΕ Student Branches at Democritus University of Thrace and ETH Zurich, aimed to promote robotic fundamentals to academic community.

IEEEXtreme 14.0 @ DUTh, 24/10/2020

Our Student Branch took part in this year's special competition which been held completely digital due to COVID-19 pandemic, but nothing less than the amazing experience of previous years.

IEEE Week, 12-18/10/2020

The IEEE Democritus University of Thrace Student Branch has once again successfully celebrated the IEEE Day despite the difficult circumstances emerged by COVID-19 pandemic. As usual, we decided to devote a whole week for the celebration and named it “IEEE Week” in order to inform as many people as possible.

The “IEEE Week” started on October the 6th (official IEEE Day) with a virtual event called “IEEE Beyond”, during which previous volunteers and officers were informing students and answering their questions about IEEE and our Technical Societies and Affinity Groups.

The “IEEE Week” continued on 12-18 October with a hybrid series of events, including both virtual and in-person activities, always respecting public health and restrictions. The events aimed at introducing students to the world of IEEE and engineering, informing them about the activities of our Student Branch and of course sharing ideas that leverage technology for a better tomorrow!

Hands on workshops, webinars and presentations with a wide variety of themes as programming, electronic automations, robotics, game development, Cybersecurity and engineering experiments were some of the events.

IEEE DUTh SB Rebranding - Project #reiGNITE

The IEEE Democritus University of Thrace Student Branch, while planning its 20th anniversary, decided it is high time it presented to the public a new image. The board’s rebranding efforts focused around the accessibility of information as a means of further highlighting both the branch’s ongoing advancement and the IEEE’s founding vision of innovating for an enhanced future.

As today’s unprecedented times require, the DUTh SB’s marketing team joined forces with skilled graphic designers to present to both the public and the student members, a means of sharing, connecting and getting informed quickly and easily. Using all popular social media platforms and a brand new website, one can easily follow the branch’s exciting journey through current events and enjoyable content, as well as share all the above with the IEEE family.

The main goal of rebranding the student branch is to cover the need of getting involved, getting informed and learning the community in which all of us belong. Through exploiting the media at the best of our ability, we strived for the creation of an insight to our activities, our future plans.
